November 11, in Italy is Saint Martin and in Sicily we use to prepare Zeppole.

What is Zeppole? It is a fried dough ball very soft inside and very crisp outside, that we use to roll in sugar or in honey.

Sometimes we prepare it also with anchovies inside.

And here my family recipe prepared by my Mom and my Aunt Rita

Here are the ingredients and the steps. You can find the video recipe in my Instagram page (my profile - highlights) or in my YouTube channel.


  • All Purpose Flour

  • Warm water

  • Yeast

  • Salt

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil

  • Sugar

  • Honey

  • Anchovies


  • Place in a bowl the flour

  • In another bowl place a part of the warm water with the yeast

  • In another bowl place a part of the warm water with salt

  • start adding slowly the salted water in the flour, mixing

  • continue adding slowly the water with the yeast in the main bowl, mixing.

  • Add water until the dough become liquid

  • when the dough is smoot, cover it and leave raising for 2 hours or so.

  • warm the extra virgin olive oil in a deep pan until it become very hot and start frying the dough in little balls. It should be still liquid

  • at the end roll the balls in the sugar or in the honey

  • If you want you can fry some balls with inside anchovies.
